The Federal Drug Administration (F.D.A.) has warned that websites on the internet that appear to be bona fide may actually , with or without the proprietors and pharmacist’s knowledge are actually selling counterfeit medications.The number of sites on the internet that the F.D.A. reports are selling counterfeit drugs is between 24 – 50.
What is a counterfeit drug and how is it different than a “generic drug�
A “generic drug†I s a drug made by a bona fide manufacturer that is a copy of the original medication. The copy cat drug is supposed to be a direct copy of the medication from original “ethical†manufacturer / drug firm that developed / invented / introduced and marketed the drug. The product may have a different name, a different color, packaging or physical size but the drug has been proven to the regulatory authorities of that country (in our case the F.D.A) that it is medically and chemically the same as the name brand medication.A generic drug has to be approved for use in the
A counterfeit drug may or may not contain the active ingredients of the medication. Or the amount, or potency, of the drug may vary from batch to batch, bottle to bottle and even table to tablet. The active ingredient may indeed be missing in the counterfeit medication an be replaced with a less effective , or even non effective drug or even a drug whose only role is to provide side effects to convince you that the medication has something in it other than a sugar pill.
