The Case for Offshore Medical Treatment - The Growth of 3rd World Offshore Proficient Technical Services
It was not long ago that the concept of computer high tech tech support from 3rd world countries such as India , the Phillipines or China was an athema. The thought from both marketing and the consumer was one of resistance as well as horror. Even now many consumers will not purchase a perfectly good laptop computer from Dell Computer since tech support ” in in India”.
Many potential customers and marketing thought that the accents alone would end the experiment dead cold in its tracks.
And yet only less than a few years later tech support is almost exclusively handled offshore. It is indeed a rarity and remarkable if the consumer reaches a home grown local north american tech support person. On top of that it has rapidly changed so that the standard that consumers expect is that provided by “Indian call centers”. Indeed the level of service provided at budget North American rates and management styles often rates poorly in comparison. The comparison is made to the Asian Indian call centers and the service that was previously the highly regarded technical support of the western world is found wanting.
Worse yet many of the supervisors and management types in North American operations have not grasped the rapid change on the ground. The feeling was “You are speaking to General Motors” “You should be only so gratefull that god has given you this privledge.”. The feeling is and was that the supervisor’s job in life was to rise through the ranks of the corporation. Now that he is in his or her mind in a situation of power he runs the roost over staff and customer alike.
The sad truth is that people in so called third world countries the job well if not beter. They are “smart as whips” , polite, gratefull to have the job and well trained. Or at least more than adequetly trained than the salesman at your local retail big box store who is there to sell you “insurance” - the extended product guarantee.
As compared to North American call service centers staff are polite , pleasant. If they cannot answer your question they will pass you along promptly to their supervisor who in most cases will solve the problem promptly or if not explain in a reasonable and pleasant , non demeaning manner , that you are outside of the warranty period or support period of the product.
Contrast that to the North American business model that only if you persist and demand a supervisor will you be directed to a long que. After a period of time you will be informed of your good fortune of being directed to “Tier 2″. Lots of luck.
In the same manner that tech postions in the computer field that were considered to be only provided by trained specalists in the industrialized world medical treatment of “Medical Tourism” is now an upcoming developing trend in the service field of the medical industry.
