Medical tourism or medical travel is not an entirely new concept. Until recently, medical tourists were usually a very select few who chose to travel for elective surgeries such as tummy tucks and face-lifts, combining surgery with a holiday in a far away locale that ensured both privacy and a pleasant stay. As well, there were also a limited number of people who sought experimental medical treatments for illness and diseases such as cancer in foreign clinics. Today there is a swelling rank of medical tourists comprised of ordinary citizens who seek a wide variety of health care services and medical care outside of their home country, and every year that number grows.

For some, medical tourism or international medical travel can literally be a lifesaver, enabling patients to access quality medical services that they might not otherwise be able to afford. In the United States, patients without private health insurance can be faced with exorbitant medical bills for even the most routine surgeries. Sometimes a heartbreaking choice must be made – to have a life saving operation and suffer extreme financial hardship or to not have the procedure and deal with the health consequences. For those who are fortunate enough to have private health insurance, some may find that their insurer does not cover all medical procedures or that their insurance plan imposes unreasonable restrictions. In Canada, where public health insurance pays for most medical care, it has been well documented that unacceptably long wait times are forcing patients to take matters into their own hands and head off shore for timely medical treatment.

Medical tourism has garnered much media attention of late. Word is rapidly spreading about the excellent medical care that is available for bargain prices in countries such as Thailand, Hong Kong, and India. In the book, ‘Patients Without Borders: Everybody’s Guide to Affordable, World-class Medical Tourism,- author Josef Woodman investigates this growing industry. He reports in depth about the high quality of care available in foreign hospitals and how patients, who have surgery performed overseas, can save up to 80 percent. By example, a heart bypass in India can be had for a fraction of the price of one in the United States.

India has become one of the world’s leading destinations for medical travelers. Over the years, India has developed a stellar reputation with medical tourists, due to its state-of-the-art medical facilities that offer advance medical procedures, such as hip resurfacing, knee replacement, heart surgery, kidney transplant and abdominoplasty, at prices that are a fraction of those charged for similar procedures in North American hospitals. ‘Axiom Health Solutions works with Indian hospitals that are staffed with some of the most highly trained surgeons and professional medical personnel available. Huge investments have been made by each hospital group to ensure the highest of standards and the most modern facilities and equipment obtainable. In many cases the success rate in these hospitals is higher than those of American hospitals.

The future of medical tourism looks bright. Factors such as improved technology and standards of care and the availability of companies that specialize in arranging medical tourism packages makes international travel for medical services a very attractive proposition. Undoubtedly, the driving force behind the rise in medical travel is the high price of medical services in North America factor that is unlikely to change in the near future.

Is Medical Tourism Only Overseas Travel ?

Posted on 27 February 2009 in Uncategorized by admin

It is an interesting point or points of view or what might call perspectives.

Medical tourism or “medtravel”  or  “medical tourism / medtravel”  often is not most times refers to people , patients or their families traveling to far off , what were once backward third world places , to get medical treatment or medical treatments which they either cannot afford to get “back home”  or are too far down the list or que.

Medical tourism can now refer to medical treatment in the good old USA.

It is now accident that often the most wealthy and powerful come to the US for treatment.

The choice of oil rich sheiks , with no shortage of cash and money to burn , – ever,  used to be “private British ” health care clinic or private British hospitals.  It was closer and more familiar to the colonial past .  However , or in spite of this many of the wealthiest people in the world now routinely , as a matter of course , to American hospitals for their medical care – be it John Hopkins , the Mayo Clinic , Sloane-Kettering or a myriad of others.

In addition to that many who holiday in the US – say for warmer Florida in the winter are already there , so to speak.  Travel costs are already covered , as well as a stay away from home in nice surroundings.  Even friends or family can visit for a stay – and have minimal costs .  Hence these areas , Florida included , have incurred a resulting boom in medical care to those who are not their direct population and citizenry.

These too can be termed “medical tourism”  or medical tourism medtravel even home in the USA.

Planning Ahead in Case of Complications of Medical Tourism Procedures Therapies

Posted on 10 February 2009 in Uncategorized by admin

One concern regarding what is called “medical tourism”  or  alternatively “medtravel” is the cost of  medical complications.

Complications can occur following any medical treatment , treatments or procedures.  It is of course a matter of numbers and stats.  It is not only  nosocomial or hospital borne infections that are of issue here. Complications resulting from medical treatments and therapies do occur on a predictable basis.  Nosocomial infections just by themselves are estimated at a rate of 5 to 10 % of therapies and treatments.  With enough time and patients medical complications do occur in some treated patients.  It is not unlike the computer information technologies adage concerning replacements of hard drives and  a regime of data backups.  It is not a matter of if it is a certainty. It is a question of when.

To this purpose it is first of all important to choose a reputable overseas medical facility with not only a good record , but good access for communication and at least some overseas ( in the industrialized world ) trained specialist medical and support staff.

This way if problems do occur quick and effective two way communications can be afforded.

Check before therapy if your health care medical plan will cover or not cover emergency problems.  It is highly unlikely that you will be put on a plane back to the health care facility both from a cost standpoint and logistical standpoint – you will hardly be in  a state to travel.

If you are actually being sent by your medical health care insurance plan for quicker or less expensive medical care this should not be an issue – there are legal and insurance concerns here for the carrier.  If you are having your travels professionally arranged – then the agency or service may arrange at home complication follow up care as a matter of course and procedure.  Lastly if you are being covered by yourself check ahead of time if your health care insurance carrier will cover this care if need be or will call it  a “pre-existing condition ” of sorts and not their direct responsibility .  If you are self insuring through your own resources make sure that you have not stretched out your financial resources to the hilt and have no financial or medical backup what so ever.
