Socialized MedicineCreeping in the US

One of the unmentioned or seldom mentioned  attributes of socialized medicine in the US is the component that if US health care becomes socialized and further limited down the line either in actuality or if the comparison either in cost or absolute comparison leads to a decline in customer service levels then a major option and stop gap to those waiting in line in other countries , those who do not want to wait or those who wish a higher caliber of medical service at home – and are willing to pay or sacrifice to pay – becomes less if not available.

In socialized medicine what happens over time is that the system responds to itself , not to the ultimate customer.  The doctor , who was previously the head of the team , on in previous – pre team work times – was the absolute power and arbitrage.  Not so in socialized medicine.  The doctor answers to the clinic that employs him or her , or to bureaucrats not to the consumer.  On top of that it is not as if the medical consumer has a choice.  Imagine a medtravel tourist complaining in writing to an address .  The bureaucrat /s could care less.  Their concern is their budget , their charts and graphs.  On top of that their biggest responsibility is not to get their boss or themselves in trouble or draw attention to themselves. If a letter or email arrives – so what .  That person lives far away.  they cannot even vote or complain to the health minister or political party leaders – who cares.  Its a matter for the medical bureaucratic system to put in time for its pension , go to lunch go home at 3:30 – stop the work on the graphs and charts at 2:30 p.m.  Thats about it. On top of that to pretend and actually believe in their mind and heart of hearts that the world and especially the medical system functioning is dependent on them and their unique and powerful administrative skills.

After all the less resources available in the end after pilfering the medical system of funds , the more the need for more administration to parcel out those limited resources in the medical and healthcare systems.

Socialized Medicine – Tales of the Que

Posted on 23 April 2009 in Uncategorized by admin

An example of why some seek medical tourism or “medtravel”  Tales from the “Que”.

Recently a grassroots organization in Canada organized a public meeting.  The group noted ” We need accountability in healthcare”.

”The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority”  needs to be held accountable for its actions.  Remember the “Brian Sinclair” incident.   For over 34 hours Mr. Sinclair sat in the Health Sciences Center emergency ward ; he died a few hours before he was found that he needed help.  It became clear that he did not need to die.  Instead of being transparent with the public as to what took place, Winnipeg Regional Health Care authority appeared to mislead the public.”

Over the last few of months we foundthta WHRA was receiving “brown envelopes’ in return for contracts.  Now , I understand the provincial auditor is investigating the issue.  Then there is that stupid decision to cut back on emergency EMO services at Seven Oaks Hospital.  Cutting back these emergency services ultimately goes against the concept of community based hospitals , which by the way , if managed properly , are more  cost effiecient and provide the same quality of care as the Health Sciences Center.

Further Tales of the Medical “Que” Up There in Canada

Posted on 23 April 2009 in Uncategorized by admin

We need accountability in health care  notes a grass roots Canadian campaign newsletter.

The self written and distributed newsletter notes that “….. then there is the “stupid”  decision to cut back on emergency services at the Seven Oaks Hospital in Winnipeg Canada.  It seems that after a major update to the emergency department of this major regional medical center’s emergency department that the working hours of the emergency department were cut back.  Talk about the left hand not knowing what the right hand was doing – in plain site.   The amazing part is that even with press releases on the openings of the updated unit complete with a ribbon cutting ceremony and a how to reach pdf being written and offered on the actual hospital website the cutbacks went into place.

Phase 1 of New Emergency Department is now complete!

Phase 1 of the new Seven Oaks Hospital Emergency Department is now complete.  A Ribbon Cutting Ceremony officially opening the new facility was held on August 19.

“This state-of-the-art department was designed to ensure we can provide our citizens with the best emergency care possible,” said Health Minister Theresa Oswald. “This expanded emergency department means improved care for patients and their families, and a better work environment for our health-care professionals.”

Please see the attached .pdf files for information on the new facility and Press Release.

Seven Oaks General Hospital Emergency Department

Phase 1 of New Emergency Department is now complete!

If one looks at a map of the coverage area of the catchment areas of the Seven Oaks Hospital  (SOGH) is clearly visible.  There are no other major regional medical centers what so ever in the adjacent local and rural areas just north of the only major center in this very large geographic areas of the Province of  Manitoba.

Manitoba is the easternmost of the three Prairie Provinces. Comparatively level, Manitoba generally ranges from 490-ft./150 m to 980-ft./300 m above sea level. Baldy Mountain is Manitoba’s highest point, at 2727 ft./831 m. Agricultural land lies in a triangle, bordering Saskatchewan and the U.S., cutting diagonally across lake Winnipeg. The northern 3/5 of Manitoba is Precambrian Shield. In northernmost Manitoba lies tundra and permafrost (permanently frozen subsoil). All waters in Manitoba flow to Hudson Bay. Before settlement, a large area of southern Manitoba was flood plain or swamp. An extensive system of drainage ditches had to be constructed throughout south central Manitoba to make the region suitable for cultivation.

Further the writer of this article notes:  ” Cutting back these emergency services goes against the concept of community based hospitals, which if managed properly are more cost effective and can provide the same level of care as the Health Sciences Center ( the major teaching hospital and medical center in the major and dominant city  of Winnipeg in the whole Canadian Province of Manitoba ).

Is Medical Tourism Only Overseas Travel ?

Posted on 27 February 2009 in Uncategorized by admin

It is an interesting point or points of view or what might call perspectives.

Medical tourism or “medtravel”  or  “medical tourism / medtravel”  often is not most times refers to people , patients or their families traveling to far off , what were once backward third world places , to get medical treatment or medical treatments which they either cannot afford to get “back home”  or are too far down the list or que.

Medical tourism can now refer to medical treatment in the good old USA.

It is now accident that often the most wealthy and powerful come to the US for treatment.

The choice of oil rich sheiks , with no shortage of cash and money to burn , – ever,  used to be “private British ” health care clinic or private British hospitals.  It was closer and more familiar to the colonial past .  However , or in spite of this many of the wealthiest people in the world now routinely , as a matter of course , to American hospitals for their medical care – be it John Hopkins , the Mayo Clinic , Sloane-Kettering or a myriad of others.

In addition to that many who holiday in the US – say for warmer Florida in the winter are already there , so to speak.  Travel costs are already covered , as well as a stay away from home in nice surroundings.  Even friends or family can visit for a stay – and have minimal costs .  Hence these areas , Florida included , have incurred a resulting boom in medical care to those who are not their direct population and citizenry.

These too can be termed “medical tourism”  or medical tourism medtravel even home in the USA.

The Strategic Importance of US Based Medical Care

Posted on 2 February 2009 in Uncategorized by admin

An interesting case in point regarding the concerns of the trending towards “Socialized Medicine” in America.   One of the major points of medicine in the United States it that it is still profit driven to a great degree.  This is true , however on the other hand there is feedback in the system leading to better care.  If I do not like the level of care – many patients can reason – I can go to another doctor / hospital / care provider.  The system is rewarded or punished for good or poor service levels or good or poor value.  There is a feedback system in check. Poor performers or poor providers are punished.

It is true that many patients who are in dire straights are not  given a choice.  They are deathly ill or without other access and must take what they are given.

In spite of its apparent costs the beauty of the American system is that is available.  Costs are what they are , however when oil sheiks need treatment – and money is no object – where do they run – its to the US.  Its not even to “private British hospitals ” nowadays.

Hence the American medical system remains an escape valve .  If a patient in dire straights in behind the ques in a country with socialized or limited medical care he or she can always go to the States for treatment.  Money has limited value if you are dead or in no shape to enjoy its mettle.

The interesting thing is that although Canada is held up as a model of available medical care with a socialized medical care system that when major political figures – not even the wealthy , have serious illness , its to the US that they run in a snap.  This is so widely reported and so common , Canadians ( who may well be in a treatment ques for an extended period for serious or debilitating medical illness )  do not even bat an eye towards this and question it.  Nothing much that can be done when it comes to the slowness of the medical system and all its bureaucracies .

Thus in spite of its failing , high costs etc the value of the American medical system , among other paradoxes is that it remains a good safety valve – available always when needed and in addition providing pressure as a good example in point to other less available or efficient medical systems of the world.

Travel Insurance – Does it Cover Events of Terrorist Attacks

Posted on 25 December 2008 in Uncategorized by admin

It may seem to be an odd concern in relation to travel of the question of how your travel insurance does or does not protect you in the case of terror and terror attacks.

It can be said that overall your chances of being affected by a terror or terrorism attack are remote. This is true. However there may be additional effects of a terrorism attack not only on the direct victims but on travelers who are in the country of the place of attack or even other countries.

You, your travel companions or even the country that has the attack may not directly lie in your path. Yet your trip either at the point of destination or even way by points may be directly affected. You need not have been in Mumbai or even India itself to have had your travel plans greatly affected.

For example your medical treatment may have been assigned a certain date and yet due to the attacks you find that all air travel are grounded.

Does your travel insurance cover such for events for cancellations or delays? Are additional hotel and travel costs covered? Will any replacement travel fares or future trips for this purpose assigned covered or will it all come under the clauses of “not covered due to acts of war or terrorism “or some other “acts of …” coverage.
