Is Medical Tourism Only Overseas Travel ?

Posted on 27 February 2009 in Uncategorized by admin

It is an interesting point or points of view or what might call perspectives.

Medical tourism or “medtravel”  or  “medical tourism / medtravel”  often is not most times refers to people , patients or their families traveling to far off , what were once backward third world places , to get medical treatment or medical treatments which they either cannot afford to get “back home”  or are too far down the list or que.

Medical tourism can now refer to medical treatment in the good old USA.

It is now accident that often the most wealthy and powerful come to the US for treatment.

The choice of oil rich sheiks , with no shortage of cash and money to burn , – ever,  used to be “private British ” health care clinic or private British hospitals.  It was closer and more familiar to the colonial past .  However , or in spite of this many of the wealthiest people in the world now routinely , as a matter of course , to American hospitals for their medical care – be it John Hopkins , the Mayo Clinic , Sloane-Kettering or a myriad of others.

In addition to that many who holiday in the US – say for warmer Florida in the winter are already there , so to speak.  Travel costs are already covered , as well as a stay away from home in nice surroundings.  Even friends or family can visit for a stay – and have minimal costs .  Hence these areas , Florida included , have incurred a resulting boom in medical care to those who are not their direct population and citizenry.

These too can be termed “medical tourism”  or medical tourism medtravel even home in the USA.

Travel Insurance – Does it Cover Events of Terrorist Attacks

Posted on 25 December 2008 in Uncategorized by admin

It may seem to be an odd concern in relation to travel of the question of how your travel insurance does or does not protect you in the case of terror and terror attacks.

It can be said that overall your chances of being affected by a terror or terrorism attack are remote. This is true. However there may be additional effects of a terrorism attack not only on the direct victims but on travelers who are in the country of the place of attack or even other countries.

You, your travel companions or even the country that has the attack may not directly lie in your path. Yet your trip either at the point of destination or even way by points may be directly affected. You need not have been in Mumbai or even India itself to have had your travel plans greatly affected.

For example your medical treatment may have been assigned a certain date and yet due to the attacks you find that all air travel are grounded.

Does your travel insurance cover such for events for cancellations or delays? Are additional hotel and travel costs covered? Will any replacement travel fares or future trips for this purpose assigned covered or will it all come under the clauses of “not covered due to acts of war or terrorism “or some other “acts of …” coverage.

Growth Niche Growth Area Medical Tourism Industries

Posted on 27 November 2008 in Uncategorized by admin

It is said that in 2007 the travel industry had general overall revenue growth of 7 %. Whether than can be sustained with current economic conditions and the financial meltdowns is a question yet to be answered? On the one hand travel costs, out of pocket funds are reduced as well as the cost of fuel being a great determinant in the rise of air travel as well as general travel and even food costs play major determinant factors. Yet on the other hand tourists who may have traveled further field may stay closer to home.

Another area of growth is in the medical tourism area. While some areas of internet related medical care – such as the sale of pharmaceuticals into the us from Canada has been reduced due to currency fluctuations of the us dollar have seen their growth and even business severely reduced if not hampered – medical tourism in the form of medical care away from the home country continues its unabated growth.

Some additional areas of growth within the medical tourism industries are for care of the elderly. This concept is being tried with European patients – elderly patients mainly in Turkey.

Elderly patients often consume a disproportionate share of medical and pharmaceutical budgets of any health care provider. It seems that with the elderly chronic care of a number of illnesses becomes a concurrent factor and issue. It is often said that in general medical care as a medical tourist consumer are 1/3 of costs in the home industrial country when all factors and costs are summed up. On top of that there are often delays and quest in tests and test results. If the number of tests and procedures can be done in one extended session both costs and costs due to delay and progression of disease states can be afforded. On top of that more speedy treatment may mean less major, less aggressive and costly as well as less heroic procedures need to be done overall.

Medical Tourism may not be a Win / Win Situation for All

Posted on 30 August 2008 in Uncategorized by admin

>The impacts of medical tourism – traveling long distances away from home to obtain medical care – which more and more is not about obtaining medical procedures that are not available at home , or seeking improved quality of medical care but in most cases either finding a way of economically “jumping the cue” or reducing the costs of treatment or therapy dramatically.

The cost differential of treatment abroad may only be a portion of the costs of the same procedures at home. To this end not only is it a case of cosmetic elective surgery but rather that insurance companies are coming up with the realization that even after travel costs they are far ahead in most financial accountings. There are issues and other costs true – what of follow-ups in cases of complications and downright negligence true.

However if one is to look at the system in a cold hearted financial sense the insurance companies are still light years ahead – in terms of output costs. In addition these complications and mishaps can be reduced through basic research and inquiries into medical systems and procedures and using well known accredited institutions.

To this point some major health care insurance providers are actually promoting medical tourism to the customers – even to the point of setting up programs , marketing programs and departments to promote , market as well as facilitate the logistics and follow through to the customers and their providers of medical care. It would appear to be a win / win situation for all.

Yet this is not always the case. Medical care and medical care costs in the states and E.U. is driven by both demand and costs. True with medical tourism the demand for medical care and services back home may be reduced. Yet medical tourism at the moment is only scratching the surface. Even the most aggressive of medical insurers estimate that in the range of only 1 to 2 % of their procedures afforded are being serviced overseas via medical tourism.

Yet in the case of the American medical system this small group serves to subsidize the medical system as a whole – providing an essential source of funds to keep the system going and in effect subsidize the health care of those less fortunate, in financial terms, but very demanding overall on the health care system – the aged, the elderly and the poor.

In the end result the demand for health care – the demand side of the supply/demand model will not diminish much. But funding which both funds the system and provides for economies of scales in the health care system will.

Thus while some may benefit from medical tourism, and the insurance companies of health care may benefit from reduced costs – in the end the medical system as a whole as well as the quality of care afforded and provided for may well decrease as well as diminish.

Travel Medical Tourism – Will Your Charge Card Cover Your Travel Insurance Needs

Posted on 12 March 2007 in Uncategorized by admin

The question is often asked – should I purchase extra travel insurance if my charge card offers travel insurance – often at no cost.

It never hurts to be careful and cautious. The costs of travel for medical care are not small. Often you we will be traveling to non tourist spots at off peak – but high travel costs.

It is not as if you can pick your time of illness or treatment. During peak tourist seasons a traveller can often pick up deals on charter flights and lodgings. Not so in many cases of medical tourism. On top of that your return may be delayed due to complications or delays in treatment. That charter flight with its deal price is not going to sit on the runway for you , or your loved one who is seeking medical treatment abroad.

Often your air tickets may be non refundable as well. Cancellation and interruption travel insurance may be more than a good idea. Does you charge card insurance cover it . Do a thorough job of research. It is best to do the original insurance contract . This may be available online freely or you may have to ask the credit card company for it – this can be done by a toll free number or mail. Best to stay away from the glossy brochures that you will find at your financial institution – they may not comprehensive or legally binding. For valid legal reasons it is always best to go to the actual contract .

One last point. Often travel insurance does not cover ” preexisting conditions”. For example if you or your loved one is travelling for cardiac treatment and you run into problems or delays due to treatment for the cardiac conditon, then under these clauses the insurance company can deem the illness as preexisting and therefore not have to pay you for the claim to reimburse the extra airfare you incur.

It is always best to ask beforehand . As well receive all answers in writing . Retain these documents in a safe place for ready access.
