You May Get Sick or Ill Yourself While on Medical Tourism Travels

When a person travels the last thing on their minds is that they will fall ill. Yes in most cases you are traveling for pleasure of perhaps business. It seems highly unlikely that you will be taken ill. Yet it happens both on holiday , vacation , business travel and yes on travel for medical care – medical tourism.

In some cases there are well known areas and vectors where is not unexpected to fall ill. Most well known of course is a person traveling to Mexico and experiencing Montezuma” Revenge ( Traveler’s Diarreigh) – which is not a life threatening condition all in all . However for most affected it is all too memorable.

When it comes to traveling what overall basic recommendations can be given or taken to heart:

First it never hurts to play it safe. Have a very high temperature that just will not seem to dissipate ? Blood in your stool ? If you have a travel insurance toll free number simply give them a call . At the worst most hotels. resorts and other facilities have an arrangement with a physician or other health care provider on call and sometimes by mutual arrangement on site.

If you are treated abroad take into consideration that there may be a two tier system at your location . It may not even be a case of one set of rules and medical level of care for those that can pay and those that cannot . There may be even be shades of grey in between. It is always best to ask.

For minor , non life threatening emergencies and ailments , the “free” care available to everyone may be fine. If you have the time. Note that you may be asked to pay fees as a non-resident which may be similar in rates to those “Back home”.

If its something serious or you have restricted time – go the private more high end route.

Planning Ahead in Case of Complications of Medical Tourism Procedures Therapies

Posted on 10 February 2009 in Uncategorized by admin

One concern regarding what is called “medical tourism”  or  alternatively “medtravel” is the cost of  medical complications.

Complications can occur following any medical treatment , treatments or procedures.  It is of course a matter of numbers and stats.  It is not only  nosocomial or hospital borne infections that are of issue here. Complications resulting from medical treatments and therapies do occur on a predictable basis.  Nosocomial infections just by themselves are estimated at a rate of 5 to 10 % of therapies and treatments.  With enough time and patients medical complications do occur in some treated patients.  It is not unlike the computer information technologies adage concerning replacements of hard drives and  a regime of data backups.  It is not a matter of if it is a certainty. It is a question of when.

To this purpose it is first of all important to choose a reputable overseas medical facility with not only a good record , but good access for communication and at least some overseas ( in the industrialized world ) trained specialist medical and support staff.

This way if problems do occur quick and effective two way communications can be afforded.

Check before therapy if your health care medical plan will cover or not cover emergency problems.  It is highly unlikely that you will be put on a plane back to the health care facility both from a cost standpoint and logistical standpoint – you will hardly be in  a state to travel.

If you are actually being sent by your medical health care insurance plan for quicker or less expensive medical care this should not be an issue – there are legal and insurance concerns here for the carrier.  If you are having your travels professionally arranged – then the agency or service may arrange at home complication follow up care as a matter of course and procedure.  Lastly if you are being covered by yourself check ahead of time if your health care insurance carrier will cover this care if need be or will call it  a “pre-existing condition ” of sorts and not their direct responsibility .  If you are self insuring through your own resources make sure that you have not stretched out your financial resources to the hilt and have no financial or medical backup what so ever.

Travel Insurance – Does it Cover Events of Terrorist Attacks

Posted on 25 December 2008 in Uncategorized by admin

It may seem to be an odd concern in relation to travel of the question of how your travel insurance does or does not protect you in the case of terror and terror attacks.

It can be said that overall your chances of being affected by a terror or terrorism attack are remote. This is true. However there may be additional effects of a terrorism attack not only on the direct victims but on travelers who are in the country of the place of attack or even other countries.

You, your travel companions or even the country that has the attack may not directly lie in your path. Yet your trip either at the point of destination or even way by points may be directly affected. You need not have been in Mumbai or even India itself to have had your travel plans greatly affected.

For example your medical treatment may have been assigned a certain date and yet due to the attacks you find that all air travel are grounded.

Does your travel insurance cover such for events for cancellations or delays? Are additional hotel and travel costs covered? Will any replacement travel fares or future trips for this purpose assigned covered or will it all come under the clauses of “not covered due to acts of war or terrorism “or some other “acts of …” coverage.

Travel Medical Tourism – Will Your Charge Card Cover Your Travel Insurance Needs

Posted on 12 March 2007 in Uncategorized by admin

The question is often asked – should I purchase extra travel insurance if my charge card offers travel insurance – often at no cost.

It never hurts to be careful and cautious. The costs of travel for medical care are not small. Often you we will be traveling to non tourist spots at off peak – but high travel costs.

It is not as if you can pick your time of illness or treatment. During peak tourist seasons a traveller can often pick up deals on charter flights and lodgings. Not so in many cases of medical tourism. On top of that your return may be delayed due to complications or delays in treatment. That charter flight with its deal price is not going to sit on the runway for you , or your loved one who is seeking medical treatment abroad.

Often your air tickets may be non refundable as well. Cancellation and interruption travel insurance may be more than a good idea. Does you charge card insurance cover it . Do a thorough job of research. It is best to do the original insurance contract . This may be available online freely or you may have to ask the credit card company for it – this can be done by a toll free number or mail. Best to stay away from the glossy brochures that you will find at your financial institution – they may not comprehensive or legally binding. For valid legal reasons it is always best to go to the actual contract .

One last point. Often travel insurance does not cover ” preexisting conditions”. For example if you or your loved one is travelling for cardiac treatment and you run into problems or delays due to treatment for the cardiac conditon, then under these clauses the insurance company can deem the illness as preexisting and therefore not have to pay you for the claim to reimburse the extra airfare you incur.

It is always best to ask beforehand . As well receive all answers in writing . Retain these documents in a safe place for ready access.
